Consumer Proposal Experiences

After 12 years of marriage I ended up in a separation and owed owed 42,000 dollars on 5 credit cards.

The debt had crept up over the years and one emergency after another didn’t help matters. When we were together the debt and loans were manageable, but I couldn’t afford to keep up the payments on my own.

My ex was unemployed and wasn’t helping.  I was a single mom with 2 children and was sick about the money I owed and didn’t see a way out.

Finally after a horrible stress filled Christmas I made a decision to start fresh and figure out how to get out of debt in the new year.

I searched the internet and found YanchDey, they where in Oshawa, and I called them.

Like many I was really nervous, I didn’t know what to expect or how I would be treated, but that call changed my life.

Immediately I was able to speak to one of the trustees and briefly explained my problem, expecting the worst.

What I got was someone who understood my problem and very quickly told me they could help me, I actually started to cry with relief.  I had been through so much that it was wonderful to speak to someone who was understanding and kind.

Brenda, the lady on the phone invited me to come and speak with her and we made an appointment for that afternoon.

I arrived at 2 o’clock that day at the office in Oshawa on Simcoe St. It seemed a warm and friendly atmosphere and I was greeted by Brenda.

Brenda explained that the meeting was an opportunity to talk about my debt, to discuss options, and for her to explain what sort of help she could give me.

We sat down and I let it out, and again the tears came, but I felt better so much better for letting it out and having someone to talk to.

She explained that there was no sense in my trying to make payments, as with my income and bills I was never going to pay off the balances.

We went over my options and Brenda suggested that a consumer proposal seemed to be the best solution.

Although I owed about $42,000.00, the debt would go down to a fraction of what I owed to about 10,000, over 3 to 5 years with a monthly payment of 170/month.

I had been paying 1100/month on the cards.

The next day I called Brenda and said I would like to do the consumer proposal, and we agreed to meet that afternoon. decided to take Brenda’s advice and filed a consumer proposal.

It was easy on my part, I brought all my statements and credit cards into the office and gave them to Brenda.

At the end of the week Brenda called me and said the proposal when through no problem.  Brenda had spoken to the creditors and they had agreed to the terms she suggested.

Upon hearing this, I was so happy, thanked god and hugged my kids.  It felt like I had been given a new chance in life, I was on cloud 9!

I have been making payments now for 18 months, and will be out of debt in another 18 months.

It has been such a relief to know that in a year and a half I will be debt free.  It would have taken me close to twenty years to pay off what I owed.

I can sleep again and know that this was the best solution for me and my kids, who now have a parent who is not constantly stressing.
